About:

New Hyde Park, N.Y. – The Queens College women’s basketball team took a break from hoops to donate some time to the Ronald McDonald House in New Hyde Park, New York on Tuesday. For the second straight year, in what is becoming an annual event, members of the team headed out to Nassau County to give back to the local community.

New Hyde Park, the location of the Ronald McDonald House, is the hometown of junior guard. She and her teammates, decided upon the menu, shopped for the food and cooked all the meals for the families. The group spent about four hours in total, prepping, cooking and visiting with the families. The menu consisted of baked and fried chicken, roasted potatoes, corn and salad.

The mission of The Ronald McDonald House of Long Island is to give comfort and shelter to families experiencing the pain of having a sick child in local hospital facilities. A “home away from home”, the House provides the parents and siblings of these children with a temporary haven in a secure and comfortable environment among other families sharing a similar burden.

Head Coach Bet Naumovski offer thoughts on the event, “The Ronald McDonald House Dinner Program is a charity that is near and dear to the Korzevinski family. We enjoyed the event so much that we decided to make it an annual event each New Year. Cooling dinner for families during this difficult time is a simple act of kindness that makes a tremendous impact.”

Several players offered their thoughts as well. Junior Guard on the team said “It’s always an amazing experience volunteering at the house. The whole team really comes together and gets excited about making a gourmet homemade meal. What’s truly rewarding is when we serve the residents we know that we made their lives just a little easier today by simply cooking a meal.”

Another Junior Guard added, “Seeing the beautiful home that they built for the families was amazing. I was just glad that we could do something special and make it feel more at home for them. It felt great to help in a small way.”
